'PALACH'
A mythical point in Rijeka subculture, meeting-place and rally-spot
of the urban guerrilla, ideas' nursery and creator of the
entire rock generations, club 'Palach' in Kruna street
was opened in November 1968 as the Medical Students Club.
In 1969 it changed name into 'Ian Palach' after the young
man who became legend of the students' movement and synonym
of the Czech resistance to the Russian occupation. Back in
70ies, due to political reasons, club was renamed into Youth
Club 'Ivo Lola Ribar' after one of the partisan WWII heroes
(although people never ceased calling it simply 'Palach').
During that period, entrance allowance was extended to the
rest of the youth population, besides students. After the
first redecoration in 1978, prohibition was introduced into
the club, which led to the increased number of riots and club's
bad reputation.
80ies brought the great changes in the 'Palach's' clubbing
activities; it gained its directors and rich program. 'Palach'
thus became representative youth's multi-purpose space in
which many of the young Rijeka inhabitants gathered. Attendance
rate was very high and most famous bend of the contemporary
rock scene held their gigs in the club. By the end of the
80ies, with a change in the political system, 'Palach' became
financially independent. Due to a bad acoustic insulation
and to a great noise, sanitary inspectors closed down the
club, which then underwent its third great adaptation. In
the middle of 90ies, 'Palach' was transformed into multi-media
centre....
